Food classification help!

by AiDenBoks (Pasig) Posted on 08/14/2013 4:20 am

My hubby and I got curious about this "grain" and tried it to substitute for rice. We both are okay with the taste. But since I'm now a Bon Apetit convert, I need to classify my food to get the right components to make my meals balanced. Where do I classify Quinoa? Starch or vegetable? Pseudocereal-fake cereal? So veggie then? ;)

Btw, I only boil it like rice. Plain water, no additives whatsoever. :)

Accdg to Google:
Quinoa (/ˈkiːnwɑː/ or /kɨˈnoʊ.ə/, Spanish: quinua, from Quechua: kinwa), a species of goosefoot (Chenopodium), is a grain-like crop grown primarily for its edible seeds. It is a pseudocereal rather than a true cereal, or grain, as it is not a member of the true grass family. As a chenopod, quinoa is closely related to species such as beetroots, spinach and tumbleweeds.

Hi AiDenBoks!

Quinoa is more of a starch than a vegetable. 1/2 cup of white or brown rice = 1/2 cup of cooked quinoa. You can completely replace rice in your meal plans to quinoa, to switch up your starch servings a bit. Quinoa has a higher protein content, too compared to rice. I would suggest adding vegetables and seafood which pairs really well with quinoa.

Hahaha great question! I've only tried quinoa so far when a friend made a yummy quinoa salad to a dinner party. Reading up on it, I'd say it was more of a vegetable, but if I were in your place, I'd also have quinoa, a bit of starch, and a salad. :)
