Diabetes

Hello! Is there anyone in the program with diabetes, or has a family history?

My lola was diagnosed with diabetes when she was 39, and she's now in her 80's. She's gone through a lot of operations and complications directly related with her condition. I'm somehow frustrated because she's lived half her life with this, but she can still remain stubborn with her eating choices. She loves very sweet fruits and carbs. A few times, her runs to the ER were simply due to her overeating during the holidays!

My dad, her son, is pretty close to getting diagnosed with diabetes. Isa pa yung matigas ang ulo when it comes to food. He loves snacking on sweet stuff, like chocolates. In spite of my mom's and my best intentions to get him to eat healthy, he gets mad at us when we tell him to lay off the chocolates and goes on hunger strike. Parang bata. Hay.

@emily: you can actually cook your Bon Appetit Diet recipes for the whole family, just multiply the serving size :) your husband can also eat what you eat now, but his food servings are different than what you have. He can follow the portion sizes indicated under the 1600 kcal program. Better yet, get him enrolled in the program too :)

Hello Ms Charmaine and Ms Laarni. I will be starting my program this coming Monday and when my husband saw my meal plan he said to double the preparation of meal so he can join me. He is diabetic though very cautious in his manner of eating. Actually he is very much disciplined when it comes to food, no sugar and less salt. Is is okay to share my meal plan (calorie requirement) to my husband?

My lola also suffered from diabetes. I must say, it's definitely a difficult disease to conquer. Once you are diagnosed with diabetes, you will have it for the rest of your life. Managing the disease strongly relies on self-discipline. The key is to normalize your blood sugar levels, fat, cholesterol and blood pressure to avoid complications. Sadly, my lola lacked the discipline, she doesn't take in the meds she's supposed to take, and she really struggled in following a healthy eating plan. Kidney disease and multiple organ failure took her from us.

She became one of my motivation to take up a nutrition degree. It's not so hard to learn the pathophysiology and management of the disease, but the real challenge for me is how to educate and motivate diabetic patients to not only take their meds religiously but also eat well and have a healthier lifestyle.

If there are BADieters out there who have a family history of diabetes or are already predisposed to it, I am positive that the Bon Appetit Diet will help you reduce your risk to diabetes. Eating healthy, exercising regularly, and of course a positive disposition are your guns against this deadly disease.

I'm living with my lola who has both diabetes and hypertension. Her blood sugar and blood pressure are maintained within acceptable range (It must be! coz I'm a dietitian... :-q )

She's not on insulin but she really has a lot of maintenance medicine. A good diet and simple physical activity, compliance with medication, support from family, and regular check-up are the keys to living normally in spite of any medical condition. :-q
